Urea is the same chemical found in mammalian urine, but the urea we buy is not from urine. It is made from natural gas. Urea is used as a hygroscopic agent in textile dyeing and printing techniques. The longer a fabric is moist and continues to attract moisture, the more time the reactive dye has to react with the fabric to produce saturated colors. Urea also aims to make it possible to dissolve more dye in a given volume for strong colors. Urea is also added to a paint or print paste.
Urea, like all powders, is dangerous by inhalation and may be irritating to the skin.
